"The Professor and the English Spy" is based on the factual account of two men’s journey through German-occupied France and Italy.

Samuel Berlin is orphaned at the age of seventeen when the Nazis arrive at his parents’ home in Antwerp, Belgium, as part of a pogrom of rounding up Jews to be transported off to death camps.

The boy’s mother and father were viciously taken from him, and Sam is left to fend for himself.

As part of the French underground, then later as a partisan fighting the Nazis in Italy, Sam Berlin (alias Antonio Bruno) and his companion, Pierre Francois Cavagna, are of a single mind-set: to cross the front lines and join the Allied forces in the continued fight against Fascism and Nazism.
